Meaford Figure Skating Club Coaches
Michael has been working with the Meaford skaters for many years now. From Collingwood, Michael has been involved with figure skating since the age of 10. From competing nationally with his partner, Andrea Derby, to now instructing young athletes to achieve their goals, Michael looks forward to many more years in Meaford.
I grew up in Meaford & started skating with the Meaford SkatingClub since the age of 4. During my skating career I accomplished 3 Gold levels: Dance, Skills & Interpretive along with Senior Silver Free Skate. After High School, I went to Fanshawe College where I graduated from the Fitness & Health Promotion program as well as the Recreation & Leisure Program. I also became a Certified Personal Trainer & Fitness Instructor. Soon after graduating I moved back home and continued to pursue my love for Figure Skating. I became a Certified Can Skate Coach as well as a Level 1 Certified Skating Coach and have been working with the Meaford Skating Club since 2009. I love watching the kids learn and have fun!
Karen came to us after leaving the Whistler BC Skating Club as her family settled in the Blue Mountains. She has an old style way of coaching with a new-school attitude. She demands and receives respect from her skaters by combining discipline with good fun, a positive attitude and sense of style.
Karen is also the club coach for the Beaver Valley Skating Club where she teaches figure skating and power skating. She has been overseeing Ice Show at both Meaford Skating Club and BVSC working with volunteers and the communities.
Karen writes, “My motivation is to introduce the sport of figure skating to skaters of all ages and abilities and to encourage and inspire every skater to set and achieve personal goals in a fun, safe and positive environment.”
Karen’s enthusiasm, hard work and dedication to the skaters of the Meaford Skating Club has truly been a valuable asset and we look forward to a great season!
I started skating with the Meaford Skating Club at the age of 4 and before I knew it I had fallen in the love with the sport and was skating 5 days a week. During my 14 years of skating I have accomplished all 4 gold tests: Skills, Dance, Interpretive, Freeskate, and 2 diamond dances. I began competing at the age of 5 and in 2015 I placed third in the Central Ontario Section, moving on to provincials. During the summers I began attending Winning Techniques Camp first as a skater and now for the past 2 years I have been employed as a counselor and skating coach.
I became a Certified Canskate Coach in 2018, and am now a trained regional coach. I enjoy working with children and sharing my passion of the sport. Figure skating has always been a big part of my life and I would like to give back to the sport in the form of coaching for many years to come.
I have been involved with The Meaford Skating Club since I was 5 years old and it has been my home ever since. I have accomplished 3 gold Skate Canada test levels including gold freeskate, dance and skills as well as my silver interpretive.
I have qualified for the All Ontario Provincial Championships 4 times and was the 2017 All Ontario bronze medalists in the Star B category. In 2018 I completed the Canskate Coaching course and love working with the kid’s in our Canskate Program here in Meaford as well as the program with the Owen Sound Skating Club. I can’t wait to share my love and passion for skating with everyone and look forward to another fun-filled season.
